WINNERS NEVER QUIT
In April of 2015, just three races into the season Joe suffered from his final racing incident as a driver. Suffering from yet another head injury and leaving him with some long term deficits from the injury it was decided to "hang up the helmet" for Joes driving career. After several months of recovery and with great support from family, friends, and marketing partners the decision was made to become a car owner. Fielding some strong finishes in 2015 with the hands of Michael "Sweet Pea" Hayes at the wheel it was obvious that the Scarbrough #37 limited stock at Virginia Motor Speedway was a solid contender. Hayes having plans to return to driving his on CR Phillips Electric #22 in the Sportsman division would not be available for the 2016 season. Joe contacted long time friend and reigning 2015 LMS champion 'Flyin' Ryan" Ryan Hutchens about combining forces for the 2016 season and the agreement was made. After the first full season the duo managed to win 75% of the races they entered and capture the season championship, Ryan Hutchens second consecutive as a driver and Joes first as a car owner. Hutchens and Scarbrough will continue into the 2017 season with hopes of continuing success. We asked Joe how he felt about no longer being behind the wheel and being a car owner?
"I am definitely more at ease behind the wheel, its very stressful watching from pit road but I have the utmost confidence in Ryan Hutchens. Hes a great driver that I have been working with since his early teen years. A ten year veteran driver that has put in his dues to show the success that he is now enjoying. As far as being a car owner I didn't expect a championship in the first season. It pretty much completes my bucket list of racing achievements so from here out I would like to continue to influence the sport in a positive direction by helping up and coming teams and drivers!"
Scarbrough has 11 Championship winning seasons. One as a crew member. one as a Crew Chief. Eight as a driver and now one as a car owner.

2015 SEASON BEGINS
Joe Scarbrough is set to start his 36th season of racing at South Boston Speedway this weekend, March 21st. Ending 2014 on a high note winning the final race of the season and clinching their first championship in as many seasons, Joe and team owner Charlie DeJarnette are set to pursue titles at South Boston and East Carolina Speedway. Friday April 3rd at Southside Speedway, the second season with the Alpha Sports Marketing #37 owned by Chris Phillips will begin. After and impressive first season together scoring many top finishes and a third place season point final. The team is looking forward to an improved season in 2015. Later this season Joe intends to make limited appearances at the famed dirt track Virginia Motor Speedway. 27 races on the schedule and were coming to the green!
SCARBROUGH MAKES LATE RACE CHARGE TO VICTORY AT EAST CAROLINA
Joe Scarbrough ended his season on top with a late race move to the outside of multi time Langley Speedway champion Shawn Balluzo in the season finale for the Moonshine Modified Championship team.
SCARBROUGH WINS MOONSHINE MODIFIED CHAMPIONSHIP
CHAMPIONSHIPS ON THE LINE AS SEASON WINDS DOWN
Scarbrough has already secured a 3rd place finish in the South Boston Speedway standings but the battle continues at Southside and Ace.
Joes consistency throughout the season have proved to be an asset to both the 93 modified of Charlie Dejarnette and the 37 Late model of Chris Phillips as the season end draws near. After a rough and tumble double header at Ace last weekend Scarbrough has increased his lead in the standings. Joes constant barrage of top finishes at Southside Speedway finds him closing on the point leaders with one race remaining.
Joes comments on the upcoming season finale;
"Im proud of what we did at South Boston. A podium point finish is never anything to scoff at. We had quite a few mechanical and setup issues there and the season being so short, we never had the chance to overcome them. On the flip side of that coin, the guys did a great job always salvaging something that I could go out and race with. Thats what a championship team is all about and it shows with the standings at Ace. The C.R. Phillips Late Model is finally coming into its own. Being my first season in a southern late model I have had a lot to learn as far as setup in concerned. We won our first pole position and got our season best finish closing in the points gap. One race left and were not mathematically out of it. Were within 10 points of the leader and less than that from second. Im really proud of that team and thankful to both Mr. Phillips and Mr. Dejarness for giving me the opportunity to work for their race teams. Im honored."

SCARBROUGH STARTS JULY WITH MOONSHINE MODIFIED WIN
After a month of consistent top five finishes, Joe Scarbrough in the number 93 Modified dominated the July 4th 40 lap event at Ace Speedway. Joe led every lap with no pressure from behind. This win following solid finishes in June extends his point lead in the series. Joe is currently in 3rd place standing at South Boston in the modified division and has slipped one position in the Southside Late Models to 3rd place.
Post race interview "The guys have been working really hard on the car. I really feel that Charlie, Aubrey and I are on the same sheet of music now and that is the reason for our performance tonight. I was hoping the race would go green all the way. I knew there was one of those tour type mods back there coming through the field and was concerned I wouldnt be able to fend him off. After the restart I saw his right door in the mirror so I figured I had him covered at that point."

SCARBROUGH CONSISTENT IN MAY
Joe Scarbrough has been consistently posting top 5 finishes this month, amounting to 5 in total. Joes top finishes have brought him into championship contention in 3 different series. Joe is currently in 3rd place standings at Americas Home Track, South Boston Speedway in the modified division, 2nd place at what is known as "the toughest track in the south", Southside Speedway in the Late Model Division, and currently leading the standings at the historic Franklin County Speedway in the Moonshine Modified Series. Joes continued charges to the front of the pack have earned him nicknames such as "front row Joe", "Joe of all trades" and "mister consistency". We talked with Joe about his season thus far and his take on the new nicknames.
"Its with been a positive month of good finishes but Im a very competitive person so Im always pushing myself harder to be better and win. The teams are doing great work, the cars are dependable and fast. We just seem to be missing that magic that will put us from third to first but I have confidence that it will come together. As far as the nicknames, its a compliment. Im having success at several tracks in multiple divisions. Its exciting for me and I think the fans are enjoying it as well. It was brought my attention that I have less than 10 starts in a southern style late model, running second in points at Southside, I suppose Im making some ripples in the water so to speak. The team players and I just need to stay focused and keep moving forward as we move toward the mid point of the season."

APRIL UPDATE
Joe has been a threat this month posting all podium finishes. At Southside speedway a finish of P3 while pounding on the lead pack made for an exciting show, showing the potential prowess of the brand new #37 C.R. Phillips car. Joe also finished second at Franlkin County Speedway in Charlie Dejarnett’s 93 after making a charge from the back of the pack. Joe’s attitude was very positive following these events, he said, “Both teams are making great progress. We have overcome some major hurtles and suffered very few setbacks. The team players and the equipment are all in line and we get better every event. The wins are coming!”

2014 BEGINS!
APRIL 4
Joe Scarbrough made his Late Model debut in the Alpha Sports Marketing #20 at Southside Speedway Friday night. Scarbrough qualified 6th on the grid and quickly moved to the 5th position where he ran with the lead pack for most of the event. Late in the race leaders Dodson and Zuskin made contact in turn one sending Dodson spinning and the rest of the field scrambling for daylight. Scarbrough narrowly avoided the carnage as Hunter Slayton was less fortunate ending his impressive debut as well. On the restart Scarbrough took the cone advantage to the outside of Zuskin and appeared to have an advantage on the restart until contact on the back straight send Scarbrough sliding into turn three and recovering to third place for the final few circuts.
Joes post race comments; “We worked really hard to get the new CR Phillips Electric amd Velocity Christian Church #37 car done in time for the opener and simply didn’t make it. As a resort we brought the 20 car out to collect some points. Its an old car but its not that far off really, I think with some shop time and a test day we could make a winner out of it but for now it’s a damn good “plan B”. As far as the race I really enjoyed it. We played a strategic game and damn near pulled off the win. There is a reason they call it the toughest track in the south, there is going to be contact and sometimes your going to be on the losing end of it. Hard racing is all it is and Im happy to have been part of the late race battle for the lead. I cant thank the guys on the team for all their hard work and team owner Chris Phillips for giving me the opportunity to drive for this team. I need to put a special thanks out to Sonny Allen for agreeing to let me drive the 20 car in his position for the night.”

MARCH 22
Joe Scarbrough in the #93 Modified of Charlie Dejarnette at the famed Virginia NASCAR Home Track of South Boston. The team lead by Crew Chief Aubrey Epperson battled and electrical issue early in the day but finished up with a solid 7th place finish.
In a post race interview with Joe he stated, “We didn’t get any practice in because of a broken alternator wire so we went cold into the time trial. It wasn’t too bad of a result, I pulled a sixth out it but its really hard to get a feel for how the car will work long term like that. We ran fifth for most of the race but I took a shot on a cone restart late race that didn’t work out. The track was in really bad shape after someone oiled it down. There was so much oil dry on the track that I actually lost sight of the car in front of me a few times. When I went outside there wasn’t a driveable groove so back we went. It was a great race for the most part. The team did a great job, we learned a few things and well be better next time. On that note we may be altering our schedule of events due to unforeseen circumstances so stay tuned for updates.”

SCARBROUGH AND DEJARNETTE SEEK CHAMPIONSHIP IN 2014
Joe Scarbrough and Charlie Dejarnette pursue the championship at Americas home track, South Boston Speedway. Scarbrough stated, " I had the honor of driving for Mr. Dejarnette in a few select events along side Crew Chief Aubry Epperson and I really felt good chemistry with the team. The guys really did an impressive job preparing the car and were fun to work with. We intend to race the South Boston series and possibly Southside Speedway as well as several other select events. Im really excited to be part of this team and looking forward to the upcoming season."

PHILLIPS SIGNS SCARBROUGH FOR 2014
Alpha Sports Marketing (ASM) CEO Chris Phillips announced today that Joe Scarbrough will be competing at Southside Speedway in the Late Model Division for the 2014 season. The deal was announced yesterday at Carls Racing Products where the two were originally introduced by mutual friend and proprietor Carl Blohm.
Phillips stated; "Joe will be driving the number 37 Late Model for the full 2014 season. Joe brings a ton of experience and ability to our team. I just hope we can put a good enough piece under him to make a viable run at the championship." Chris Phillips also stated, "He sent me his resume with over 200 wins, 7 championships, and wins at 14 different race tracks up and down the East Coast...I was convinced, plus he's a really cool guy! Also, driving for Alpha Sports in '14 will be Sonny Allen in the 20 Late Model at Southside Speedway for a limited schedule, as well as Michael (Sweet Pea) Hayes in the number 22 Sportsman at Virginia Motor Speedway. We would also like to acknowledge our partnerships this year with After Hours Fabrication, Hawkeye Graphics, and Carl's Racing Products."
When we asked Joe what he thought about the new partnership he said, “Carl Blohm of Carls Racing Products introduced Mr. Phillips and I about a year ago, I knew he owned a race team capable of winning, and he knew I was a driver capable of winning. We all went out to lunch together and had a blast! The chemistry of personalities clicks. Over the past year we've swapped stories and ideas, had lunch together several times and we really see eye to eye. Its a really good relationship and we are going to have fun working together. I was blown away by his offer to drive for ASM and especially his insistence that we run the number my dad flew for so many years. I am really looking forward to racing Southside this year and working with the ASM team. They are a great bunch of guys and I know that they are capable of doing what it takes to make it happen. I cant thank Carl enough for introducing us. I hope he can free up some time to help out. Hes very knowledgeable and an awesome spotter, not to mention I think he missed his calling as a stand up comedian! Im really excited about this opportunity, its going to be a blast!”
ASM is preparing a brand new chassis produced by After Hours Fabrication, outfitted by Carls racing Products, with the finishing touch by Hawkeye Graphics for the Southside Speedway Late Model #37. The "toughest track in the south" just got a little tougher!

Zero to Hero in Oct. for new team
Franklin County Oct 26
A low car turnout did not affect the action as Scarbrough chalked his first win in Charlie Dejarness’ #93 modified. Jeff woods lead the field to the start with Scarbrough on the outside. The two ran door to door and wheel to wheel for the first several laps as the duo battled for the top spot when incidental contact sent Scarbrough spinning down the back straight. Joe miraculously managed to avoid contact with the inner retaining wall and rejoined the field for the restart. Soon after the green Joe moved to the top spot and never looked back. Joes’ after race interview;
“This is a great place to race and I really appreciate the hospitality of the fans and officials, hopefully when can build a field here and be on the regular schedule next year. We had some electrical issues early today but Crew Chief Aubrey Epperson once again isolated the problem and the car never skipped a beat after that. Charlie and Aubrey are both very experienced, it’s a pleasure working with them.”
October Recap
Langley Speedway Oct 6 proved to be a frustrating night due to the failure of a $.50 gasket in the fuel cell cap. The 93 car was black flagged 3 times as the problem went undiscovered each time resulting in a 14 lap deficit and a 14th place finish. Joes after race comments: “The car ran well. We kind of got sandbagged by the rule changes, this class runs here every week so we assumed the rules would be the same, but you know what they say about assuming right! We were up against cars with 4bbl carbs, wider wheels and some of the most exotic aero packages I have ever seen on a modified. Shame on us, we should have done our homework better. Regardless I felt like we still had a top 5 car had we not lost all those laps early on. Langley is a tough track to get around and I was very proud of the teams preparation and setup decisions for that track. I mean really, who checks the gasket inside the gas cap as part of pre race preparation?!”

Scarbrough and Dejarnette team up for podium Debut at SoBo
Joe Scarbrough returned to South Boston Speedway this past Saturday for the maiden voyage of Charlie Dejarnettes’ #93 modified. The car had some issues that appeared serious during Fridays test and tune but Car owner Charlie Dejarnette and Crew Chief Aubrey Epperson kept digging until Joe found himself in a machine capable of a 3rd place finish.
“It started off rocky on Friday. We had some sort of an ignition issue and never got up to speed. Things weren’t looking good but Charlie (Dejarnette) and Aubry (Epperson) burned some midnight oil and started off early Saturday morning attacking the new team woes we were facing. Saturday we were still a bit behind the 8 ball, missing the first practice. In turn that only left us with one short practice session that was even shorter due to the fact that I didn’t turn on the lap scoring transponder and got black flagged. The good news was that the misfire was gone and the engine was strong, there is room for improvement in the chassis as well. I felt the shock package needs improvement but all in all it was good enough for a 6th starting spot 3 tenths off the pole and a podium finish the first time out of the shop. Charlie and Aubrey are great guys to work with and definitely know the ins and outs of race car preparation. Im looking forward to working with this team again.”

GREMLINS!!!
Joes debut in Bob Unczurs, Creative Surfaces, Carls Racing Products Chevrolet SS was hindered by mechanical issues. Joe was forced to bring the car down pit road 25 laps into the first feature due to overheating. Joe qualified in 12th position just .2 seconds off the pole position landing him a 12th starting spot in the highly competitive field. Joe had moved up to 10th position in what looked to be a car capable of more when he ducked down pit road to end the night.
Joes post race comments;
"Despite the multiple issues we had tonight I really feel that this car has a great amount of potential. More impressively, the team members kept digging as we met one mechanical complication after another, It was like we had gremlins at work against us. Things that just dont happen, happened but as they say, thats racing. Well get it straightened out be be back in force for the Hampton Heat 200".

Scarbrough Gains Late Model Opportunity
Team owner Bob Unczur, marketing partner Carls Racing Products, and Joe Scarbrough have agreed to a limited schedule this season. The first appearance for this new combination will be at Langley Speedway in Hampton VA. this Saturday July 13th for twin 75 lap NASCAR Late Model races in preparation for the upcoming Hampton Heat 200 also held at Langley.
Scarbrough stated "Im very excited about the opportunity to drive Bob Unczurs' #10 in the upcoming events. I cant thank Danny (Corker) and Carl (Blohm) from Carls Racing Products (Ashland VA) enough for their role in making this happen and their confidence to choose me as the driver." I got to meet Bob Unczer the team owner for the first time this week. We worked in the shop for several hours preparing the car. I was really impressed at how hands on he is. Its his race car and he knows his way around it, my kinda guy!"
Langley Speedways annual "Hampton Heat" will be held July 27th.

I got to meet Bob Unczer the team owner for the first time this week. We worked in the shop for several hours preparing the car. I was really impressed at how hands on he is. Its his race car and he knows his way around it, my kinda guy!"
Langley Speedways annual "Hampton Heat" will be held July 27th.
2013 Update
Joe spent the winter of 2013 coaching an up and coming youth Arena racer and exploring the opportunities of his free agency. "Im still working in motorsports, coaching, instructing, ride along and arrive and drive events. Not having to maintain a race team has really given me the opportunity to do other things in the sport. I am looking forward to some developing opportunities for a some of the bigger events. Its a little too soon to let the cat out of the bag but things look very promising."
Joe is expected to make an announcement later this week about his next appearance.

Season Wrap up 2012
Season ends!
2012 proved to be a roller coaster of a season with some highs and lows.
Competing my first full season of the NASCAR Southern Modified Tour was a great
honor. I met many people in the series that I am certain will remain lifelong
friends. Other great opportunities this past season introduced me to some great sports car enthusiasts, excellent
students, a trip to the General Motors Proving Grounds in Lansing Michigan, my
first start in a NASCAR Late Model, Some IMCA modified racing and my first test
and tune in an NHRA drag race car. I would have to say that the most rewarding
instruction I have ever done was this season at the Teen Driving Solutions.
Teaching a racer to improve his skills is rewarding but teaching a Teen (and
some of the parents as well) critical skills that can and will save their lives
on public roads really left me with a warm fuzzy feeling!
As 2013 approaches discussions continue with many potential marketing partners and team
owners. There are many chips in the air and where they land is sure to be
interesting. Keep in tune to this website for updates and Facebook for breaking
news. [email protected]
I would like to wish everyone a safe and happy holiday season. I look forward to
seeing you at the races in 2013!

Quoted modified competitor
Mike Norman, driver of the 12 car. Mike was unable to start the event due to
mechanical failure in practice but he wasn’t far from the action. Before Joe had
his helmet off Mike had his head in the window with hand shakes and congrats on
the impressive run bringing Joe and the 37 car to its 6th place finish.
Joe qualified deep in the field and went a lap down in the caution free
first segment of 75 laps. Joe was behind John Smiths 25 car at the break and did
not receive the lucky dog returning him to the lead lap. At the
half way break Crew Chief McMullen pulled off a single man pitstop, swapping 2
tires, adjusting stagger while Scarbrough could be seen cleaning his own
windshield from inside the car!
When the race resumed Scarbrough was on a mission. It was obviously “GO
TIME” as Joe began to move forward in the pack, the lead pack! Joe was running
in a pack of cars that were battling for 4th thru 8th and he was going
forward in spectacular fashion. Joe didn’t seem to be able to pass on the low
side, he would drive under cars in the turns only to be over powered down the
straights…until he went to the high side and that was a show! Joe running
5th in line when he finally got the break he needed, a caution with 15 laps to go that would put him
back on the lead lap. A 15 lap charge it was! Dead last on the grid, past the lapped traffic and digging thru
the leaders. Joe managed to pick off Thomas Stinsons 7 car with one lap to go and was rapidly gaining on the 02 of Tim Brown
when laps ran out.
From the back to the front twice and battling Frank Flemmings 40 most of the night to be the
lucky dog car, there wasn’t a dull moment.
Joes post race comments:
We had a really good run tonight. Mac learned a
lot at Thompson last race and it showed here. We felt the car was one of the
best handling cars on the race track at Thompson but we were horribly
underpowered. Here at Caraway our qualifying time is evidence of that as well.
It also makes it very difficult to work traffic. All of my passing must be done
in the corner and not only that, but the pass must be so dominant in a short
section of race track that I can take the groove away from the other car to keep
it from motoring by. Im really proud of my guys, we were joking about being the
3 musketeers, Andy Bogg my spotter
and Johnathan McMullen my crew chief. They are great guys and great friends, I
felt bad for Mac when I rolled down pit road at the ½ break and he was all by
him self! He did a great job and gave me a great car. I know he has less to work
with now than ever before but hes really digging
deep.
Joe will race his
final race with Aftershock motorsports this coming Thursday at Charlotte Motor
Speedway. Joes 2013 plans have
not yet been released. Aftershock Motor Sports will be liquidating after the
event.

UNOH SHOWDOWN
THOMPSON CT
Driver Joe Scarbrough and Crew Chief Jonathan
McMullen made the long haul to Thompson CT from their home base of Richmond VA
this past weekend. Met by a few of their die hard volunteer crewmembers Arthur
“Scott”Herold , Pete Hutchinson, and Joes biggest mentor Joe Scarbrough Jr (Joes
Father) they ventured into what
would be the toughest challenge of the season since Bristol back in August. Joe managed to pull out a miraculous
qualifying lap that put the “underdog” team into the southern field in the
final qualifying position of 20th, eventually working his way up to an 18th place finish after a race long battle
with fellow rookie contender Mike
Speeney.
Joe “won the lottery”of southern cars that did not qualify for
the shootout and once again Joe climbed aboard the 37 car and ventured onto the
5/8 track to battle the best modified competition in the world.
The 37 car trailed the field the entire event despite the driving
efforts of Scarbrough. It appeared that the 37 car was one of the better
handling cars in the race but was drastically underpowered in relation to the
rest of the field.
Joes post race comments;
I don’t want to sound like I came into this event negative
because I always give 100% until the checkers fall but sometimes you have to be
realistic with what you have and I knew we didn’t have enough. This is the
first of the final 3 races for this team. Bristol really proved to everyone
that we needed to upgrade the power plant in this car but instead it was
decided to shut the team down after only 6 races in it. Needless to way with
that decision, things are not going to get any better here as far as unpgrades.
Im thankful that that team owner is allowing us to finish the season as well as
thankful to have the opportunity to compete at this level. I only hope that
someone recognizes just how valuable the members of this team are for doing so
much with so little and I hope I get the opportunity to work with all of them in
the future. It was great to have my Dad at this event. He was my mentor for so
many years and always able to make a difference with his input on my
performance. It was good to hear from him that in his words, “there was nothing
else you could have done with that car” I think that’s the first time I ever
heard that from him, I must have done something right! lol

SCARBROUGH MAKES MOVE FOR FUTURE WITH DOUBLE DUTY AT LANGLEY
Scarbrough was prepared for a long night of racing at Langley Speedway
Saturday night when he agreed to run the additional event in the local modified
series driving the 03 of Sabatino Motorsports, sponsored by Carls Racing
Products in Ashland VA.
NASCAR WHELEN 150:
Joe started deep in the field but didn’t stay
there long. His years of experience at Langley Speedway showed as he proceeded
to carve his way thru the field from his 14th starting position to the top 5 before
the half way break in spectacular fashion. Joe not only had the ability to (for
lack of a better description) bury the car into the corner on the apron and at
times even kicked up dirt from the infield in his charge to the front. To top it off Joe
even made several strong attempts for 4th position to the outside lane of Tim Brown
for 4th.
On a restart in the latter stages of the race the field stacked up in turn one sending cars
scattering and leaving Scarbrough with a mangled right front. Joe limped the 37
back to his pit stall while McMullen, Mullins, and the Banreys’ went to work
patching the car up so Joe could wrestle the wrecked racer to a
9thplace finish.
Joes post race comments;
We struggled to get the car handling all day, I just couldnt get it
to turn the way I wanted to. Mac made a few more adjustments before the race and
I wasn’t really sure if it was going to help but he hit the mark. The car was
fantastic and it was a joy to run the way I know I can run. Battling traffic and
catching the leaders. We had a great car mostly due to Macs great calls. My
spotter Andy Bogg did an awesome job, I could hear it in his voice on the radio,
you see, hes always so calm and emotionless but there was almost a cheer in his
spotting! It was awesome to go out there and do what we can do. I want to thank
my local friends for showing up and helping out, Matt Mullins, Curt and Kim
Barney. You guys bailed us out when we were short handed and I owe you one!
Thanks!
Langley Modified 50
Joe qualifed the Sabatino 03 at a respectable 7th position in the large
local mod field. The race went 45 of its 50 lap distance green. In that time Joe picked
his way up to 5th position in what appeared to be a car that was very loose at the exit of the
turns. Joe was very smooth and consistent with the car despite the loose
condition, and methodically working his way forward. On the restart with 5 to go, the 33 car spun directly in front of him. Joe
locked the car down but the field behind him did not have the time to react the same. Joe
was hit from behind lifting the rear of the 03 car off the ground driving it
thru the spinning 33 car and hard into the first turn wall ending the night.
Joes comments;
It’s a shame, the car wasn’t really working the way I wanted it
to but I was still going forward, it was quite a handful off the corner but it was still competitive and we
were running respectably. I think this team has alot of potential. This is not the first impression I wanted to leave, I
am actively seeking a team to align with for 2013 and despite the fact that this
wasn’t my fault, I don’t feel any better about it. Bobby Sabatino and the Carls
Racing Products crew work very hard on this car and I cant thank them enough for
the opportunity to drive for them. I am looking forward to working with them
further in the future.
Joes next race is at Thompson CT next
Sunday.
SCARBROUGH-AFTERSHOCK PART WAYS
Joe Scarbrough announced his free agent status today for the 2013 season.
Joe and Aftershock Motorsports have been partnered since the 2006. Sharing
dozens of wins and multiple championships together over the last several years,
the partnership will terminate at the end of the 2012 season.
We asked Joe about this unexpected news:
“It really blindsided me and I don’t really understand the reasoning
behind Aftershock suspending operations but it is what it is. All the team
members were shocked. At Aftershock we really had great chemistry and functioned
well as a team. There were no hero’s and no one was beneath any task that needed
to be done. Jonathan McMullen my crew chief, Andy Bogg my spotter, Darren Mix my
agent, Pete Hutchinson, Scott Herold, Jason Scharfstien, and Randy
Hutchins are the best crew I have ever worked with and we all agree to continue
to work together in future ventures. These guys are not only the best I have
worked with but they are all great friends of mine, I don’t know what I would do
without them. It’s a shame that we just moved into the NASCAR Whelen Southern
Modified series and began to show that we belong there with good performances
at Caraway and Bowman gray to have
it all end like this. I really don’t have an explanation as to the team owners’
decision, I wish I understood it myself. Needless to say we have one hell of a
team that will continue to work together and will be an asset to any team that
we align with in the future. I wish the best to team owner Vicky Castegren and
will hopefully have the opportunity to work with her again on future ventures. I
was promised that the team will finish out the 2012 season with events at
Langley, Thompson, Caraway, and Charlotte. To my friends, fans, and team mates I
just want to say that this is not the end but a new beginning.”
Scarbrough will pilot the 37 car at Langley this Saturday in one of 4 final events for the team.
UNOH 150
Bristol TN
Bristol TN
After many hours of preparation and effort Joe and the Aftershock
motorsports #37 failed to qulify for the UNHO 150 at Bristol Motor speedway.
Qualifying 37th fastest the team was forced to watch the
race from the side lines. Needless to say spirits were not very high in the
Aftershock pit but Joe did take a moment to reflect on the event. “This is what
happens when you bring a knife to a gunfight, the team operates on a very low
budget and when you get to the big tracks were farther off the pace. This track
is ½ mile and 95% of that the accelerator is on the floor. If you’re down on
power, you’re going home early. Im sure well see the same issues at Thompson but
hopefully the field will be smaller. That’s why weve made all the other races
this year. Give me time and laps on the race track and I can make things happen
but here, we simply didn’t have enough to get in the race. I feel really bad for
all the people involved, Mac and the guys worked really hard, took time off work
and paid out of pocket to be here, not to mention the investments of the team owner
and all the sponsors involved. Im sorry I couldn’t pull off the miracle that
we needed to make the show.”

BOWMAN GRAY
STRUTMASTERS 199
August 4th 2012
WINSTON SALEM NC
Survival was the name of the game at the infamous Mad house as the Strutmasters 199 set anew all time high for cautions, 2 of which Joe was involved in single car incidents. The night began with the team running 22ndfastest in practice.
Joe had been complaining to Crew Chief Jonathan McMullen of a vibration in the left front right that made the car difficult to drive. Mac made several changes to the left front, seemingly solving the problem for qualifying. Joe qualified 21st In the 25 car field.
Once the green dropped the carnage began. Coming from his 21ststarting spot Joe made some spectacular moves ducking and dodging his way up to 13th when contact sent his 37 spinning in the first turn. Joe spun the car to the infield and pulled right back out before the leaders could come by, maintaining his place on the lead lap, but once again to the back of the pack. A long green session and heavy traffic allowed the leaders to catch and overtake Joe putting him a lap down.
Later in the event Joe was working his way around the non existent oustside groove in an attempt to get his lap back. Joe had worked his way around 3rd place car Andy Seuss and was moving to the outside of Tim Brown when he got into oil entering turn 3 and spun into the turn 3 wall, causing him to lose a second lap with 19 to go. After a quick pit Scarbrough returned to the melee and managed to get one of his 2 laps back as he continued to wrestle the 37 thru the pack of lead lap cars eventually finishing 12th.In a post race interview with Crew Chief Jonathan McMullen, “Mac”said “Joe did one hell of a job dodging the carnage tonight. Until this race he had never seen this place. He had a plan to stay out of trouble for the first 150 laps and then go like hell. It’s a shame things went the way they did, he was flying on the outside and wound up in the fence because of oil on the race track. After that contact with the fence he came in and the front end was all bent up, I told him to just go back out and be careful…dammed if he didn’t go out and start passing cars again!”
We spoke to Joe after the race as well:
Madhouse…now I get it!! From lap one on I was watching guys slam and bang, there were a few cars that you just couldn’t get near. I could see that they were bound a determined to be a caution a few laps before it would happen, one would push, the other would shove, and the intensity would increase until carnage resulted. Im really proud of the team, we should have had another top ten finish here. The track crew did a great job of cleaning all the wrecks up for the most part but when they cleaned up the oil trail with 20 something to go they put a huge focus into cleaning turn 1 and 2 and not really into 3 and 4. On the restart I took a shot on the outside and all the leaders dropped to the low groove, I found bite and drove from all the way up along side the 2nd place car from tenth! It was nuts!! I passed 6 or 7 cars in one turn and still had a run down the back straight but when I got to turn 3 the car instantly swapped ends, there was no saving it and the process of getting off the wall sealed our fate, putting us another lap down with too little time to get a second lap back. We got one of them! All said and done we had a decent night, we came from the back twice and for the most part the car is unscathed. We bent a tie rod and a wheel. Some nights you have to judge yourself by your performance and not by your finish. This performance was a personal victory.
Aftershock Motorsports General Manager was also Joes spotter for the evening, Darren Mix said "I dont know how he missed the wrecks he did tonight! At one point I watched him dive into the infield under one spinning car, turn the car almost dead right in the grass, shoot back up onto the race track, drop a gear, miss several spining cars and gain 4 positions without a scratch! As a spotter I was speechlees, and he did things like that all night! The only thing that really got him was the contact in turn one, the car on the outside came down and ran him over the burm, and the oil in three. Nobody knew it was there. The track crew spent close to 15 mins cleaning 1 and 2 but when Joe went sailing into 3 on the outside that car was backwards in what seemed like 3 car lengths. He did a great job, Im proud to have him as our driver. Easy on equipment and very strategic. We dont have the raw speed to just go out and dominate like we have in other divisions so Joes skill is what keeps this team in the hunt! Really, look at the car, 199 laps at Bowan and the only thing bent is a tie rod and thanks to him thats all thats bent! When I saw him go around on the outside in 3 I figured it was all over. Any body else would have wasted that car but he backed it up and kept going thru the field with inches of toe in!

South Boston Speedway MAD series July 22 2012
Joe and the Aftershock motorsports put up a pair of podium finishes Saturday night at Virginias historic South Boston speedway. An incredibly slick track created chaos in the first 25 lap event but Joes dirt track expertise was not to be doubted as he dodged the carnage and broad slid his way to a second place finish. The second 25 lap event proved to be less spectacular as far as carnage was concerned but Joes way of manhandling the 08 wasnt. It seemed the ill handling 08 car was on the brink of disaster in every turn but Scarbroughs years of experience (particularly is his dirt racing experienc) found him a not so distant 3rd to the events winner Lauren Edgerton. We caught up with Joe after the race to collect his thoughts, "First and foremost I need to thank Vicky Castegren the owner of Aftershock and Hyperion for without her non of this would be possible. Its been a bad week for me personally but a day at the races is a truly great escape. Nothing else matters once the green drops, its all about the race...especially when you have a super slick track and a McMullen Nicols monster under the hood!! The real spotlight tonight is up there in victory lane, Lauren Edgerton is a very good firend of mine and I am incredibly proud to see her in victory lane. I have always seen an abundance of talent in her driving and tonight its all about her...but next week at Old Dominion were still second in points behind Slayton and I intend on closing the gap."
FIRECRACKER 150
Caraway NC July 6 2012
TOP TEN!!!
That was Aftershock Motorsports most used saying last night when
they finally shook the DNF monkey off their backs and put in a solid tenth place
finish, Aftershocks first successful 150 in the NASCAR Southern Whelen Modified
Series.
SCORCHING!!!!!
That was the word of the day as the temperature at the NC speedway exceeded 100 degrees for most of the day. The high temperature wasn’t
the only obstacle the team would have to overcome as practice began. In the first session Joe complained that the car wasnt turning the way it should in the center of the turn. The next lap Joe brought the 37 down pit road and the Aftershock team went to work. New team members Ryan and Randy Hutchens set work putting the car on jacks and making the adjustments directed by McMullen. Seconds later the 37 was back in action for the last laps of the session. Joe said the car felt much better despite the fact that the lap times failed to reduce. The second session put the team to the test. Joe brought the car down pit lane and the hood came off. McMullen and crew went to work replacing the alternator, eliminating any testing for the second and final
session.
Qualifying saw a 16.2?? that was worthy of 16th starting spot in the 23 car field. Joe stated "the last time we were here we ran 16.2 in qualifying we were dead last and the track record was set by the pole sitter, this time its put 1/3 of the field behind us so in reality were going faster. I feel the carb that Gene Nicols put on the car made the difference. Good time trial laps are very dependent on horsepower at a track like this”.
The race was exciting as Joe battled the entire night looking very impressive in the high groove with several close calls ducking on dodging the
carnage to a tenth place finish. Post race a very overheated looking Scarbrough stated, “ Im really proud of the team and so relieved to finally have finished
one of these races and to do it on a brutally hot night like this is proof that weve nailed down the cooling issues! The shame of it is this is probably the worst the car has handled! We just got a bad deal at the tire truck tonight. Not that there was anything wrong with the tires, they just didn’t size out the way we wanted them. Too much stagger is what we suffered from, its makes the car oversteer and that
magnifies the problem by overheating the right rear tire, making MORE stagger and thats the last thing we needed. The car just kept getting worse as the race went on. I just held on and tried to be a smooth as possible because I was determined to finish this race!”
Post race McMullen interview, “I wish I could have done more with the tires but there is only so much you can do with tires that wont size up. I could
see him (Joe) sawing on the wheel and slowing down toward the end of the first 75 and I knew that the car had to be bad for him to working that hard that
early. At the ½ break I made an adjustment to the tires…actually I just about flattened the right rear to get the stagger out. I wasn’t sure it was going to
work but I had confidence that Joe would make the best of it. It worked for about 25 laps because we were moving on the outside for a while but eventually it caught back up with us and the car got loose again. Joe got everything he could get out of it, the right rear is gone, no rubber left at all. I think I can see cord in a few spots.”
Joes next Whelen modified race will be at the infamous Bowman Gray “Mad house” in August. You
can expect to see Joe and Vicky Castegrens Aftershock team in the MAD series at
Old Dominion and South Boston in the near future as well.

Old Dominion Speedway M.A.D. June 2nd
After the May 12th event at ODS, Crew Chief Jonathan McMullen went to work on the 08 in preparation for the next event and his efforts were not in vain. Joe drove the 08 car to a pair of 2nd place finishes in Saturdays twin 35 lap features at the historic northern VA speedway. The first event proved to be an epic battle between the 12 car of Robert Conner, the 08 of Scarbrough and the 2012 undefeated 77 of Hunter Slayton who saw his first loss of 2012. The 77 car proved to be back on its game in the second event with a commanding lead over Joe who was tailed by Conner. Joes' post race statement was "Mac did a great job this week. We have always had some sort of issue with this car at the bigger tracks that I couldnt put my finger on. The car would be unresponsive to adjustment but Mac found it this week and it took some significant fabrication and modifications to make it right. Now we are at square one with the setup on the car so essentially this is the first time this car has been on the track because the changes Mac made were that significant. Im really looking forward to moving ahead with this car. Slayton is fast, REALLY fast! Hes passed us up with suspension technology so its time to hit the books and get educated if were going to catch him.
MODIFIED AFFORDABLE DIVISION May 12th
Manassas VA at Old Dominion Speedway, Joe and the Aftershock Motorports team took the historic speedway in the MAD division debut. The weather was perfect, the competition high, and the team was in good spirits going into this event. During the first practice session it looked like something was amiss in the handling of the 08 car and when we stopped by the pit area it was confirmed that was the case. The team proceeded to change every spring in the car. While doing so we caught a quick word with Joe about what was going on and he responded with a laugh, "We couldnt find a pair of priests to perform an exorcisim on that last setup so were just going to throw it out and try another one!" After the second session it was much of the same with the exception of Crew Chief Jonathan McMullen, hard at work with a power saw in the front suspesion area. When we asked him "why the sawzall" he responed "fine tuning!"
Joe Qualified the car 5th and the top six invert put the 08 on the outside pole. Joe won the drag race to turn one over Jeff Woods and proceeded to lead the first ten laps until the 11 of Humblet slipped inside and took eventual winner Slayton with him. Joe held on for a solid third place. Post race Joe stated, "The crew did a great job and made the car much better than it started off today. Basically I had a ton of horsepower to work with and not much else so once I over heated the back tires it was pretty much game over. We tried something nes this weekend and it lead to a series of issues that we didnt see coming but all in all, we had a great time!
Joes next scheduled event is Caraway in the NASCAR Souther Modified Series.

NBC 12 RICHMOND VA
Caraway April 21st.
The bad luck streak continues as the Aftershock race team suffers a 4th straight DNF at Caraway this weekend. The 37 car qualified 22nd on the grid for Saturdays event. When we asked Joe what happened in qualifying he stated "What do you mean? Thats .2 seconds faster than weve ever qualified here!" Joe was in good spirits before the event, he said "Mac and I (Crew Chief Johnathan McMullen) got our signals a little crossed before qualifying with the tire setup but weve got it straight now and should have a few surprises in the race". When the green fell thats exactly what happened! Joe moved from 22nd to 11th in exciting door to door nose to tail hard racing action. The 37 car was one of the only cars capable of running the high groove and seemed destined for a top 10 and possibly top 5 finish when it suddenly fell off the pace and pulled behind the wall just before the 100 lap mark. In a post race interview McMullen stated "something happened in the electrical system after we took a big hit on a restart. Someone up front missed a shift and Joe got blasted from behind. Soon after that Joe said that the gauges were flashing on and off indicating a short in the system. Once the problem started affecting the ignition system it was time to pull in. Joe made the right call, if the engine miss was not realted to the electrical issue, the team simply can not afford a significant engine issue. We only have one engine so better safe than sorry." Post race statement with Joe stated, "It didnt end well but it would have. I proved to myself tonight that we can run competitve in this division and we will. Mcmullen is doing a great job with what weve got, we just need to get reliability out of this car and well put some solid finishes on the board. It is a 16 year old car, its going to have a few issues. Nothing that cant be fixed, its just that every week its something new."
SOUTH BOSTON APRIL 14th
Scarbrough and the Aftershock Motorsports team took to the high banks at South Boston Va this weekend. The team made several changes during the 2 practice sessions and qualified the car 21st in the 27 car field. Joe quickly moved up to 16th and settled in to ride. During an early caution, the 37 car strangely struck the inside retaining wall. The team lead by Crew Chief Johnathan (Mac) McMullen repaired the crash damage and the 37 returned to the race. In those closing laps the reason Joe lost control became evident. A post race interview with McMullen stated "It looks like the pressure line on the rack came apart. The fitting on the pressure side pulled the threads out of the housing, its unbelievable that $1.00 part just cost us a race!" Joe stated "we really had a good car tonight. I was just settled in and letting the race come to me. I was scuffing tires during that caution period when the car just locked left! I had no idea what happened, I thought maybe one of my gloves got hooked or something but when we went back out after the repairs, the power steering was out and I knew that didn't happen when I hit the wall. Once again I felt we were well on our way to a top ten finish. I have confidence in this team, they prepare a very good car. See you at Caraway next week."
CARAWAY APRIL 7TH 2012
This weeks raced produced mixed emotions for Joe. The team did a great job preparing the car but over looked one small issue that NASCAR mandated be corrected before qualifying. The team lead by Crew Chief Jonathan McMullen did some "precision guesswork" to get the car qualified for the event. Qualifying as fast as he did the week before, he started 22nd for the event. Ducking into pit road on the initial pace laps, McMullen and the Aftershock crew of Hutchinson and Johnson went to work getting the toe corrected that they suffered through qualifying with. During the race, Scarbrough was on the lead lap when his power steering failed. Joe continued to manhandle the 37 car for another 43 laps until he "ran out of arms" and pulled the 37 behind the wall. Post race Joe, (looking a little weary exiting the 37 car) went straight to hauler without comment. When he returned he stated " My apology for darting into the hauler, I was a bit worn out after that but mark my words, we may be down but we are far from the end of this fight and we will get to where we belong. The team is going through growing pains right now but every week they learn and it shows. This is one of NASCARs premier divisions, in my mind the top one...the fastest, oldest class that NASCAR has. Its an honor to even take the green in tonights event."
Joe and the 37 Aftershock team head to South Boston Speedway this Saturday for 150 laps of racing.

CARAWAY SPEEDWAY
March 31st proved to be a tough night for Joe and the Aftershock motorsports team. Joe piloted the Hyperion Stud #37 to a 22nd starting position. Joe spent most of the race trailing the field but managed to stay on the lead lap in the 18th position at the 75 lap mark when the 1/2 mandatory break happened. When the race returned to green Joe began to work his way up to 13th. On lap 88 a spinning car rolled up the race track and clipped the left front tire breaking the steering rack and forcing Joe behind the wall. The team worked feverishly to replace the damaged parts in attempt to return to the event. The team was unsuccessful in its efforts to get back out on the track. In a post race interview Joe stated "I'm very proud of the team, especially the crew chief Johnathan McMullen. The crew did a great job, especially when you consider this is the first time this team has competed at this level of competition. We were what appeared to be well on our way to a top ten before the lightning struck. Hopefully we will get it all back together and make it out for the next event." Joe is scheduled to compete at Caraway this coming weekend April 7th once again.
Preseason test at Langley Speedway
2 short sessions at Langley speedway were conducted Thursday March 29th in preparation for the season opener at Caraway March 31st. Crew Chief Johnathan McMullen (Mac) along with Carb and ignition guru Gene Nicols tune the Aftershock motorsports #37 after the first session.
Welcome to the 2012 season
As the 2012 NASCAR Whelen Southern Modified season approaches, Joe and his teammates have been hard at work. Aftershock motorsports crew chief Johnathan McMullen and team spotter Andy Bogg have led the shop efforts to prepare a competitive ride for one of NASCAR's top touring divisions. This last minute decision by Aftershock had the team working long hours right up to the moment the hauler was loaded and headed for Caraway speedway. The opening event for Caraway was rained out and rescheduled for this coming weekend, April 31st. When Joe was asked about the upcoming season he said "We didn't get to test this car in the off season but I did manage to keep my hand in the game. I instructed at VIR, I performed ride alongs in a cup car at Richmond, and even participated in a Karting event in West Palm Beach. I spent many hours side by side with the crew in the shop fabricating sheet metal and preparing the chassis for the season. Its an older car with a rebuilt engine but I feel confident that the team and I will find some speed in the old girl and work our way to the front of the pack!" Keep your eye on Aftershock motorsports white #37 on the NASCAR Southern Whelen Modified Tour this year!

2nd By A Nose
Scarbrough and the Aftershock team visited Motor Mile Speedway, just outside of Radford, Virginia on a sweltering summer Saturday in early August. The on track action proved to be equally as hot as the temperature, when the 75 lap feature event came down to a green-white-checker finish. When the dust had settled and the checkered flag had waved, Trevor Edwards in his #32 modified came out on top, with a fierce battle for second between Joe in the #08 and AJ Winstead in the #99. Scarbrough had edged out Winstead by fractions of a second to come away with the runner-up position.
More testing and racing to come in the following weeks, with Scarbrough looking to pilot the #08 modified to the top again. Next on the schedule is Southside Speedway, where Joe has quickly become one of the benchmarks of performance at that rough and tough bullring just outside of Richmond, Va. Here is highlight footage from the last time Scarbrough was at Southside Speedway, with some pretty intense in-car footage. http://www.youtube.com/user/TMRacingVideos#p/u/5/WNUYWPSjoaM

BOOM!!!!
Scarbrough was looking forward to the twin-25's this past Saturday, July 16th at Langley Speedway, until something went awry in qualifying. The crew found a bind in the suspension post-qualifying where Joe ended up 9th out of the 20 car field. Things seemed to be fine until he took to the track for warm up laps prior to the first of 2 features for the modifieds that night. The green flag dropped, and immediately upon entry to the first turn on the first lap something let go in a BIG way inside the rear end of Aftershock #08. The car took a hard turn to the right in the center of the pack, and thanks to Joe's quick reflexes and the fast actions of the other cars in the field, Joe was able to spin towards the inside of the turn and come out completely unscathed, with the exception of the parts failure that caused the whole mallei. Joe and the Aftershock crew will be hard at work getting the parts replaced and everything fixed to be back out at Southside Speedway on Friday the 22nd for a triple-30 night for the modifieds, followed by a 50 lap race at South Boston the following day.
Hard Work Pays Dividends
Independence Day weekend was full of races and progression in the development and tuning of the Aftershock Motorsports 08 modified. The race weekend started at Langley Speedway with a pair of 30 lap races for Joe and the Aftershock team. The hard work and long hours put in at the shop during the week were paying off with a very reliable car for Joe, but the package was just a little bit off and the results showed that there was more work to be done. Qualifying started Joe in the 11th position, leaving a large uphill battle to get into contention for the win. By the end of the short sprint race, Joe had climbed his way up to a 6th place finish. The second twin 30 race didn't go too well, resulting in a 7th place finish for that race.
Joe and the crew spent a lot of hours back at the shop getting things ready for Joe's debut race at Southside Speedway just 2 days later. There, things made a turn for the better. The night started off with Joe qualifying in 2nd position, his highest qualifying position for the '11 season. The top 6 qualifying order was inverted, so the 08 lined up in 5th for the start. After a very good race, Joe was able to make his way up to finish in 3rd place. Joe was clearly the fastest car on the track at the end of the race and was running down the leaders when laps ran out.
Joe and the Aftershock team will be at Langley Speedway on the 16th. After the tremendous upswing in progression as of late, we all look forward to seeing what will happen for the 50 lap feature on Saturday.

With the Highs Come the Lows
After a the week prior's race was rained out after just 17 laps of racing, the team was back at it at Langley Speedway this past Saturday night for twin 25's in support of the K&N East Visit Hampton 175. The night started out well with good progression in practice, but an ill-handling race car in qualifying set Joe and the Aftershock team to start in 7th in a 15 car field for the first of two 25 lap features. Half way through the first race, Joe wasn't able to progress through the field like he normally could. He knew there was something uncharacteristically wrong mechanically with the car. Relegated to an 8th place starting position in the second of the two races, determined by finishing position in the first race, Joe had quite an uphill battle to get to the front. Upon the drop of the green flag, the gremlins unleashed their fury, and Joe was left hanging on for dear life in attempts to maintain control of his car. Incredibly, he salvaged a 12th place finish in the second race, which doesn't sound very good at all, but in the hands of anyone else, the car would likely have come home on a wrecker.
Joe and the team have a couple weeks off to gather themselves and make repairs to the #08 Hyperion Stud, Matlach Fabrication, Innovative Machine Chevrolet. They hope to see you out at the track for the fun and excitement of the next race night. Scarbrough Wins Again!
2011 has proven to be a challenging year for Joe and the Aftershock Motorsports team. The debut of their new Matlach Fabrications chassis has been a bit rough. Through the perseverance of Crew Chief Mac, crew member Andy Boggs and Joe, Aftershock Motorsports has recorded their first victory of 2011, at Franklin County Speedway, in Callaway, Va.
"Its great to be back in victory lane! The crew deserves it, they've worked very hard preparing this Toliver House / Hyperion Stud Chevy. I would really like to thank all the folks at Innovative Machine and Matlach fabrication for all of their creations that make this car a winner, and the Denso Iridium spark plugs we just started using are the best improvement to our engine program in years and all we had to do was install them!"
